Dear Principal:
I would like to request your assistance in distributing the enclosed flyer to your students to take home to their parents. The flyer asks Hawaii State income tax filers to donate $2 (or $4 for married filing jointly) to the Hawaii School Repair and Maintenance fund, which will be used to support Hawaii 3R’s and public school facilities-related projects.
Hawaii 3R’s is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose purpose is to help provide a safe and nurturing learning environment in Hawaii’s public schools, by leveraging State, Federal, and private funds with extensive support from the community to complete repair and maintenance projects. Additionally, Hawaii 3R’s promotes civic vitality by increasing community pride and participation, supporting and facilitating volunteerism, and by recruiting the participation of key sectors of the schools and the community – students, parents, teachers, businesses, the military, unions and trades organizations, civic groups, youth groups, etc.
Since 2001, Hawaii 3R’s has awarded 530 grants to 190 different schools on the six major Hawaiian islands (Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, and Molokai) totaling over $20 million. By DOE estimates, these projects would have cost over $47 million to complete. In just eleven years, Hawaii 3R’s has saved the State over $43 million! (The flyer indicates lower totals because it was printed prior to additional projects being completed)
