It’s one of the primary reasons 3R’s was formed in 2001. Without exception, volunteers have continued to drive repair and maintenance projects at several Oahu public schools this year.

Prudential Locations Foundation

On September 20th, a group of 35 volunteers from Prudential Locations, spent a little more than two hours at Ka’ewai Elementary in Kalihi, applying non-skid paint to campus walkways to protect students and staff from slipping.

Additionally, volunteers repainted the lines in the school’s parking lot and hopscotch areas.

Earlier in the year, these seasoned volunteers from Prudential Locations performed a similar service at Kailua Intermediate. To date, Prudential Locations have completed 15 volunteer projects with Hawaii 3R’s. Both school projects were coordinated and supervised by Jade Painting.

Mahalo to Prudential Locations!

First Hawaiian Bank

As part of a new corporate initiative at First Hawaiian Bank, bank employees have dedicated their weekends to community service throughout the state. Hawaii 3R’s was the beneficiary of this effort last Spring when over 100 bank employees and friends volunteered at three Oahu public schools: Manoa Elementary, Kawananakoa Middle School, and Waialua High.

Altogether, these volunteer projects not only boost student morale at the schools benefiting from the effort but save the state thousands in repair and maintenance costs.

More than 50 volunteers from Prudential Locations showed up bright and early on a Saturday morning ready to trade in pens and Deposit Receipt Offer and Acceptances (DROA) for paint, rollers and brushes. The morning started out cloudy, but even the threat of rain could not deter these volunteers from painting curbs, parking stalls and main drive ways. Their efforts even inspired the neighboring fire station to repaint (red!) curbs fronting their station. Jade Painting provided the on-site supervision for this half-day project and did a superb job in assigning this large group of volunteers that the job was completed quickly.

Never let it be said that bankers can’t handle the heat! About 40 bank employees braved the sweltering heat and high humidity in Ewa to beautify the front lawn of Ilima Intermediate on Fort Weaver Road. Demonstrating their motto, “CPB Works For You,” these dedicated bank employees from all parts of Oahu got down and dirty, cutting and planting sod into the school’s front lawn. They also planted new hedges along the front perimeter. With help from Hawaii 3R’s, the area also has a new irrigation system and a new concrete pad that joins a dirt area between the sidewalk and the campus walkway.

The late U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye, who passed away on December 17, 2012, in Bethesda, MD, was one such Visionary.

As the founder of Hawaii 3R’s, Senator Inouye not only helped to seed the fledgling program with federal funds and manpower, but he also made sure to check in on Hawaii 3R’s projects around the state on nearly every visit home.

We are very pleased to share this photo sampling of the various Hawaii 3R’s projects from around the state from previous years. Volunteers come in all forms, from young to old, students to administrators, family members and even our folks in military uniform.
