HANALEI PLAYGROUND DEDICATION POSTPONED
DEDICATION OF BROSNAN-FUNDED PLAYGROUND AT HANALEI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HAS BEEN POSTPONED

Honolulu & Hanalei, Kauai: Due to overwhelming community interest, the dedication of the new playground at Hanalei Elementary School has been postponed. A new date has yet to be determined. The new community celebration will not only include the blessing of the playground, but will also include a luau and entertainment.

The dedication was initially scheduled for June 4, 2007, before the school's summer break. However, the school and the planning committee decided to reschedule the ceremony so that the community could participate in the celebration.

Actor Pierce Brosnan and his wife, Keely, donated $100,000 to the non-profit organization, Hawaii 3R's, in March 2007 to replace an unsafe playground at Hanalei Elementary School. Hawaii 3R's also provided a grant of $47,800 towards the project.

The playground planning committee consisted of Keely Brosnan, Megan McCullough, Mona Green, and Sherry Scott. The community volunteers included Matt Hunter, Hobey Beck, Michael Olanolan, Brian Hennessey, Gary Fisher, Joe Marvin and Tom Grindal.

photos of the event will be made available to the media - if you are interested please contact hawaii 3r's at 521-5524.

BROSNAN FAMILY TRUST $100,000 DONATION HELPS
BROSNAN FAMILY TRUST'S $100,000 DONATION TO HAWAII 3R'S FOR PLAYGROUND AT HANALEI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BEARS FRUIT

Hanalei, Kauai: Actor Pierce Brosnan and his wife, Keely, donated $100,000 to the non-profit organization, Hawaii 3R's, in March 2007 to replace an unsafe playground at Hanalei Elementary School. Hawaii 3R's also provided a grant of $47,800 towards the project.

On June 4, 2007, at 1:00 p.m., the new playground will be dedicated at the school.

According to Pierce Brosnan, "We were disheartened that the playground equipment was condemned for so long and we wanted to find a way to help. We believe that play activities enhance children's educational experiences, and these children were missing out."

Keely Brosnan added, "We initially planned to donate the money to the State, but we ran into some red tape. We were fortunate to hear about Hawaii 3R's -- through Hawaii 3R's, this wonderful playground will be completed in a matter of months. And I am especially pleased that one hundred percent of our donation will be spent on this project."

"Hawaii 3R's is well known in the schools, but not as well known by the general public," acknowledged Ryan Shigetani, Executive Director of Hawaii 3R's. "We want to get the word out that if you want to donate money towards improving any public school's facilities, we will ensure that your funds are used efficiently and effectively. Or, if you have a group of volunteers, either skilled or unskilled, we will help match you up with a school and a project."

"Along with Pierce and Keely Brosnan, I must also thank the volunteers from the Hanalei community," stated Corey Nakamura, Principal of Hanalei Elementary School. "These volunteers showed their commitment to the students of Hanalei Elementary by removing and disposing of the unsafe playground."

The playground planning committee consisted of Keely Brosnan, Megan McCullough, Mona Green, and Sherry Scott. The community volunteers included Matt Hunter, Hobey Beck, Michael Olanolan, Brian Hennessey, Gary Fisher, Joe Marvin and Tom Grindal.

In 2001, Senator Inouye began an initiative called Hawaii 3R's (Repair, Remodel, and Restore Hawaii's public schools). Working with State agencies, trade unions, businesses, the military, community leaders, parents, teachers, and students, the goal is to match State, federal, and private funds with volunteerism - "sweat equity" - both skilled and unskilled, to complete repair and maintenance projects at a significantly lower cost.

Hawaii 3R's received funding from the State and Federal governments. It has also received private funding from the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation, Hawaii Community Foundation, Campbell Estate and the James and Abigail Campbell Foundation, AT&T Foundation, American Savings Bank, and Prudential Locations.

Hawaii 3R's awards grants to proactive public schools that step forward with enthusiastic volunteers, business support, and/or private contributions of equal or greater value to the requested grant amount.
