Capital Improvement Program (CIP)
In 2019, the Hawaii State Legislature appropriated Capital Improvement Program (CIP) monies to Hawaii 3R’s to help with the state Department of Education’s repair and maintenance backlog. The backlog runs the gamut from repairing sewer mains to replacing old and worn out rain gutters to repairing ADA ramps. Most of these projects aren’t “sexy” in the way of beautifying school campuses, but they are essential to the health and safety of students, teachers and staff. Qualified contractors from within the community are hard at work during the COVID-19 pandemic getting these essential projects completed.
Thank you to all of them and to the state Department of Accounting and General Services (DAGS) partners on all neighbor islands who are helping to coordinate this important work.
Academic Health Center at Waipahu High School
In a unique partnership between the state Department of Education, Hawaii Pacific Health and Hawaii 3Rs, a new academic health center at Waipahu High School was completed in Spring 2024. The center will be open to the public, but most importantly, the center will allow students to learn alongside of healthcare professionals from Hawaii Pacific Health. It is the first academic health center at a public school campus in the nation.

Playgrounds
Superintendent Keith Hayashi launched a new initiative in early 2023 to bring play back into the lives and education of Hawaii’s keiki. Play has always been fundamental to the health and wellbeing of children. In these times of the post COVID-19 pandemic, playing is even more important to the development, health and socialization of our young ones. This is a statewide initiative and expected to be a 4-5 year project.
